Kim Petras
Another outstanding musician we’re putting under the spotlight this International Women’s Day is none other than German artist Kim Petras. This transgender icon known for her upbeat bops made waves during the two major awards shows — the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) and the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards — as the very first out transgender musician to ever perform on their stages.
In support of the LGBTQ+ community, MTV held the EMAs that year in Budapest, where a law had recently passed that equated homosexuality with pedophilia. As a fighter for gender equality, Kim Petras’ performance, as well as the awards show itself, stomped on divisive gender norms and made their statement heard loud and clear.
However, taking a stand isn’t limited to music for Kim Petras. On the 2021 VMA red carpet, Petras pulled up wearing a head-to-toe latex bodysuit paired with a mini dress — a call for awareness of the unnecessary mistreatment of sex workers. How’s that for a statement?
